Brittany Haslam Art Education Emphasis

Art, for me, has ultimately been about exploring.  In my lifetime of creating art, I have experimented with a number of different mediums, techniques, and ideas.  I have drawn inspiration from many different aspects of my life, whether it be nature, life experiences, or the art i'm exposed to at school.
In my time at Weber State, I have been taught many of the tools necessary to construct a solid foundation as an artist.  I feel as though I have sharpened up my techniques throughout each semester of my studies.  I am learning more about myself as an artist, and what direction I want to take with my art.

I feel as though I am now able to carefully analyze ideas and concepts in works of art, and give constructive feedback to my peers.  I'm learning to explore ideas further than what is expected of me and expand on my understanding of those ideas.  Lastly, and maybe most importantly, i'm learning to let my art speak to me, and learning that sometimes as an artist you have to put your motives aside, and let your art be what it wants to be.

Initially, I wanted to stay true to my beloved techniques of realistic drawing and painting, since I pulled so much inspiration in the realistic art that I was seeing from other artists. But, as my art has progressed, I have started to gravitate towards creating more conceptual pieces.

I am greatly inspired by all things Alaska related, as I spend summers working there in the fishing industry.  I have spent countless hours working with and studying the in's and out's of all fishy things, and find myself absolutely fascinated with what I have seen and experienced.  I have worked on many pieces that revolve around the wildlife and fish I've seen there (as you can see in my portfolio), and I hope to continue taking my work in this direction, and exploring these concepts even deeper.

As I am interested in illustration, I hope to continue to learn how to illustrate picture as message, and push my conceptual pieces to be as effective as they can possibly be.  I hope that through the BFA program, I can continue my growth as an artist and push myself past what I thought was possible for me to accomplish with my work.  By being in a creative environment with other artists, I believe that the competition and constructive push from peers and professors alike, as well as researching and seeking new information, will help me to build upon my work and strengthen my portfolio.  I will be able to continue exploring and growing, and ultimately better myself as an artist.
